Get Your Kicks

Sixty Inches From Center’s “Dialogue: Writing in the Margins” event is this Thursday, 6-8pm. Come! It’ll be my first time on a panel and I’d love to see your beautiful faces in the audience.

Illinois residents: The Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago is free every Tuesday! Spend a summer evening on their terrace with some live jazz.

Obligatory MCA spiral staircase shot.

And congrats to Germany for winning the World Cup! Fact: Exactly 10 years ago, I was living in Germany. (In high school, thanks to an übernerd program I was in, I got to be a part of a foreign exchange, spending 3 weeks in Hamburg and 1 week frolicking all over the south.)

Atop the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain,
summer 2004.

Verrückt.

One trip around the sun // Hol den Vorschlaghammer!

Today, this blog turns 1! Within the span of one wondrous year, together, we’ve: shaken up the scene with big and ambitious and impassioned showshopped all over the art world without forgetting local talentembroiled ourselves in debates and discussions and [hopefully] learned a thing or two; and revealed the creativity and kinship and spirit of this global art community in more ways than I could’ve ever imagined.

Whether you’ve been following since the beginning or you’re a newcomer [confused out of your mind and wondering how you got here in the first place], thank you. To another year and many more to come!

To celebrate / “celebrate”… Here. Have some of my favorite search keywords that [somehow] led some visitors to this site: “art that is emotionally confusing,” “how many werewolves does it take to screw in a lightbulb,” “jenny tbh i do still like you and i dunno do you want,” “should i pursue my coworker,” “when you see this you know shit just got serious.”

And the art travels continue! Starting next week, I’ll be running amok in Switzerland (Zürich, Basel, Lucerne, Berne, Lausanne, Geneva) and Germany (Berlin). Time to brush up on my German by busting out my old mp3s of Wir sind Helden’s Die Reklamation. (Kidding.) (Not really.)

Greetings, blogosphere

Is there a Blagojevich blog? A Blogojevich, if you will? If not, someone needs to get on that.

Being here almost feels like updating my high school LiveJournal again. I haven’t changed much since those innocent teen years. Except I’ve forgotten how to conjugate modal verbs to the past subjunctive in German and I can probably no longer link any opponent’s assertion to nuclear war while speed reading at a policy debate competition and my air guitar and lip-syncing routine to the last two minutes and fifteen seconds of “Geek USA” is probably a bit rusty. Gottverdammt.

Well, at least I have an Ivy League education. Much of which was spent rummaging through a basement art gallery closet, trying to find room to store cases of Three-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe’s. Take that, bright-eyed, bushy-tailed teenaged self!
